Thibaut Courtois’ countryman Toby Alderweireld has advised him to make a move away from Chelsea if he wants to get regular playing chances.
Courtois who is 21 years of age at the moment had signed for Chelsea a couple of years back in 2011; but, he is yet to make his first appearance for the Blues. He has been placed on loan to the Spanish club Atletico Madrid for the 3rd consecutive year.
The way Chelsea’s first choice goalkeeper Petr Cech is performing at the moment, it doesn’t seem Courtois would be able to cement his place in the first team of Chelsea pretty soon. He would have to keep waiting and Alderweireld doesn’t want him to do so. The 24 years old Belgian central defender reckons that rather than waiting, Courtois should think about taking a transfer and going to a club where he can get regular chances to play.
Talking to the reporters about Courtois yesterday, Alderweireld said, “I know him pretty well and I don’t think he will be happy sitting on the sidelines quite regularly at Chelsea. May be, he should think about making a permanent move to Atletico or signing for any other side where he is going to be the first choice goalie.”
“I have spent a lot of time with him in the last couple of years and I have no doubt in my mind that he can become a great shot stopper. There aren’t too many weaknesses in his game.”
Courtois is the first choice goalie for his national side at the moment. He featured for Belgium in all their World Cup qualifying games and will be their no. 1 in the finals as well.
Courtois hasn’t done poorly for Atletico Madrid either in the last two seasons.
Chelsea’s Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has said that he is prepared to wait to become the first choice goalkeeper at Chelsea, but he is not afraid of the threat from Petr Cech. The Czech Republic goalkeeper continues to be the number one and he is regarded as one of the best in the world. He has won numerous trophies at Chelsea since joining the club in 2004, but the club see Courtois as the future despite Cech still having many years left on his professional career.
Cech is only 31 years old, which is probably the peak age for a goalkeeper, who continue to play for as long as 38 or even 40 years old. Courtois, meanwhile, is at the age when Cech joined Chelsea. Even though he has been an official Chelsea player last two years, he has never played a single game of his club. He has been on loan at Atletico Madrid for the past two seasons since joining the Premier league outfit for £9 million. He is regarded as one of the best young goalkeepers in the world, which has resulted in interest from clubs like Barcelona.
Courtois has revealed that he decided to stay at Atletico Madrid for a second season because he wanted to play regularly in a World Cup year, but next season he is prepared to take risks.
“The club (Chelsea) and Jose Mourinho wanted me back for this season. They also considered the option of sending me out to a team in the Premier League. But I was not interested in this option, I feel good in Madrid and wanted to play in the Champions League with Atletico. I was not afraid of fighting for a spot with Petr Cech. I have no fear of anyone, I believe in my qualities,” said the 21-year-old.
